Beautiful Bultos

"These brightly colored sculptures of santos (saints) or other religious figures are carved from the wood of trees that grow in New Mexico: cottonwood, cottonwood roots, aspen and pine. Bultos are used for daily reverence, for general decoration, and as a talisman in churches and private homes." This beautiful piece is the artwork of Rodolfo Parga one of the many artist at the Spanish Market this past weekend.

The Future

This is Bernardo Jaramillo III, one of the young artist exhibiting at the Spanish Market this weekend. He is holding the Retablo of San Pasqual patron saint of cooks that I bought from him. We like to purchase art work from the young artist every year.

"A Retablo is a term for a Latin American devotional painting, especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art."

If you want to make a statement when you walk into a room these neck pieces from China will do the trick. The day I was at the Folk Art Market I didn't see anyone try one on but I would have loved to have snapped a photo of someone modeling one. Would you wear one?

Together As One

I have so many of these photos left but it would take a long time to show them to you all so I decided to end with this one. The one thing I love most about attending these pow wows is that all of the dancers come from different tribes yet they all seem as one when they dance and when they meet up before and after the event. Just like these two, sharing a moment after a dance.

One People

Yesterday we attended the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow. In the backround our the Taos mountains which are a very spiritual place for the Taos Pueblo people. There were dancers from all over the United States, Canada and even a few Aztec from Mexico. It was very moving to see the people from different tribes together in one place.

Today we are headed up to Taos again but this time we are attending the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow. The singers will use a drum similar to this when performing the music used for the dances. I shot this at a perfomance a few months ago.

Governor Bent's House Taos.

This is the home of the of the first territorial governor of New Mexico, which features adobe architecture, 19th-century frontier artifacts and family furnishings. I did not get a chance to go in but I can say I would prefer it over a mansion.

Our Lady Of Guadalupe Taos

Just on the outside of the Taos plaza is Our Lady of Guadalupe church. It's not as famous as St. Francis de Asis in the Ransho de Taos but it was pretty against this blue sky.

She Came To Party!

You'll have to click on this one for better view. I loved this woman in the Tie Dyed dress with the white gloves. While at the Taos Solar Music Festival she didn't care who watched or what type of music was playing. She was just there to have a great time and boy did she!
Happy Weekend everyone!

And it's that time of the month again. It's Theme Day here on CDP and this months theme is Reflections. As I was walking down Bent street in Taos I caught sight of a reflection of the stairs leading to the street on the door of this skin care shop.
