Spanish Market - Carrying On Tradition

Meet Miguel Strunk. Miguel is 18 years old and working on carrying on the family tradition of Straw Applique. This is a collaborative piece that he worked on with his grandfather. Listen to his grandfather talk about Miguel was so wonderful. You could just see the pride in his grandfathers face and here it in his voice.

Spanish Market - My Purchases

My favorite thing to purchase at Spanish Market can be found in the Children's Artist area. They are both Retablo's and painted with natural pigments. The first piece, St.Francis, was created by a 15 year old artist and the smaller Virgin De Guadalupe was created by a 10 year old artist. I actually spied the St. Francis at the preview event on Friday evening and made it a point to search it out first thing yesterday morning.

Contrast

Spanish Market was in full swing when I took this shot. This time I was standing on the other end of the street near my office. The day we perfect, the crowds were large and guess who I ran into, you guessed it, Kate. I could have spent thousands at this years market. I did make a purchase but spent much less. I will show that to you tomorrow. Enjoy your Sunday.

Getting Ready for Market

Yesterday, as I arrived at work the City of Santa Fe crews were hard at work setting up the tents for Spanish Market. I took this shot mid-afternoon as the artists were starting to move in. As evening hit the rain arrived, my first thought, I hope the tents were strong enough to keep the artwork dry.

After The Music

Last night I went to the bandstand after work for some wonderful Blues music. On my way home the sky started to display the most wonderful colors. I rushed to a safe spot where I could park and snap this shot. Tonight is the start of Spanish Market weekend. One of my friends is an artist and she is treating me to a preview party. I will try to sneak some photos.

Dancing the Evening Away Again

The evening that I shot Kate at the bandstand concert I also had the opportunity to captured Antara. You will remember her from Kate's post this past Sunday. I admire how she just danced the evening away on her own. She seemed so free and alive.

You Make Me Smile

The other night shortly after capturing Kate, I caught sight of these too. At first they were dancing alone then they came together and the smiles began. It was really sweet to see.

Capturing the Blogger.

Yesterday after work I walked down to the plaza to listen to a Jazz musician who was performing on the bandstand and guess who I caught taking photos. Yes, that's Kate snapping some photos of people dancing on the plaza. Who know's where I will see her next. Make sure to check out her blog.

My Santa Fe Kate

Kate is back in Santa Fe and yesterday I was fortunate enough to spend some time with her chatting about blogs and catching up since her last visit. She is my favorite Santa Fe tourist! If you haven't checked out her Santa Fe blog you can see it here. She will be in Santa Fe until the end of the month and then she will be back on her regular blog Visual St. Paul.

Hiding from the Sun

When people were not shopping under the tents at the Folk Art Market they could be found milling around. Fortunately the market provided umbrellas to those who chose to protect themselves from the sun. The clouds weren't too threatening but that changed hours after I took this shot.

Learning a few things

This young woman was learning few things about South Africa from artist Lulama Shilabeni. All of the artist who came to the market were all so friendly and very accommodating to all of the photographers.

Colorful Prints

This is artist Santosh Kumar from India.  He was presenting on of his rugs for a potential customer. I would love one but I would probably hang it. These were too beautiful to be trampled on. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. One more week for Spanish Market, want to come?

Market Time!

This is the entrance to the second half of the Folk Art Market. I thought the colors of the decorations blended in too much with the sky. I prefer the ones from last year. You can see that here. I had an off day in regards to photography. I will have to work on some of these shots before posting them. Don't you just hate days like that.

And They Cheered!

You could hear their excitement even before they appeared in front of me. From a distance you could hear the clapping and faint cheer of MEXICO! As they approached you could hear the crowd chime in echoing their excitement.

Waiting for the Beginning

Before the parade of the countries started I caught these two waiting around. I am not sure why they were outfitted in the Algerian flag but they sure got peoples attention.

The Artists of South Africa

These ladies were so fun to watch. They were so happy and having a great time, you couldn't help but feel it.

In Beautiful Color

This is one of the artist from South Sudan. Take a look at that wonderful necklace that she is wearing. I am looking forward to attending the market today to see more of her wonderful bead work. Yesterday I attended the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow. I could not believe when I got home. I ended up with a little over 500 images. Something else to look forward to. Happy Sunday everyone!

Happy To Be Here

There were so many wonderful smiles as the artists from all over the world proceeded along the parade route to the stage. This beautiful smile was brought to us from Lao PDR (People's Democratic Republic). Looking forward to the market tomorrow.

The International Folk Art Market Is Here

Yesterday I attended the kick off for the 10th Annual International Folk Art Market. This was the beginning of the parade of all the artist who will be at the market. Stay tuned for more and have a happy Friday!
