La Conquistadora

Today to end the Fiestas there was a procession of La Conquistadora or Our Lady of Peace. Story has it that this is the oldest known Marian statue in the "New World". She was once stolen in the 70's but was returned to her place of honor in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. It is said that Don Diego de Vargas prayed to her prior to retaking Santa Fe from the Pueblo Indians.

I love the photos. Just on a hunch I thought that you and your readers might enjoy a music video called "La Conquistadora" by The Krayolas at www.thekrayolas.com. The song is inspired by the venerated statue and the venerable Father Francisco Geronimo whose bones lay beside her.

Lovely pictures. Just stumbled on your blog. Cool idea. I'm in Santa Fe too, I posted pictures from the Novena in last June of La Conquistadora. This is such a lovely place to live and you have a good eye.
